How to make wood pellets from sawdust
There are many raw materials for pellets, such as wood, paper, cardboard, grain, alfalfa, corn husk and straw, grass clippings, yard waste, forest and agricultural waste. In this article, we will focus on how to make wood pellets from sawdust, but the process is basically the same with other raw materials.
The wood or other raw materials to be used in the process are crushed into sawdust. Then through the ring die, the raw material is forced to be extruded with a fixed diameter from the die hole, and finally compressed into dense pellets.
The heat generated from compression and friction in this process can melt the lignin in the wood. As the pellet passes through the other end of the ring die, it will slowly cool down. As the lignin cools, it can cement all the raw materials, resulting in hard and strong pellets.
Most of the wood sawdust pellets are produced in large-scale wood sawdust pellet plants, but in recent years, small-scale wood sawdust pellet plants have become more and more popular with households and small-scale wood sawdust pellet production companies. If you are thinking about making pellets yourself, the following will teach you how to make wood pellets from sawdust, and you can also read more: How To Choose The Best Wood Sawdust Pellet Mill
Steps of how to make wood pellets from sawdust:
1, Raw material processing: chipping, crushing
The raw materials used in the wood sawdust pelleting process must be crushed to a very small size. Generally, it takes 3-5mm to fit into the ring die. If the raw material is logs, large branches, tree trunks, etc. First, use a wood chipping machine to process into 3-5cm slices. If the raw material is like wood chips, you can skip this step. Wood chips or other small pieces can be further reduced with a wood crushing machine (sawdust making machine).
2, Raw material moisture control: sawdust drying system
We recommend that customers check the moisture content of raw materials in advance. Under normal circumstances, making wood pellets from sawdust requires a moisture content of 12-18% of the raw material. If your raw material has a high moisture content, it is recommended to add a sawdust dryer to reduce the moisture content of the raw material.
3, Core section: wood sawdust pellet machine
Here, the raw materials enter the pelleting chamber through the feeding system. The high-speed rotating ring die and pressure roller drive the raw materials, which are evenly distributed on the inner wall of the ring die under the action of centrifugal force, and are squeezed by the pressure roller through the ring die hole to form cylindrical pellets.
4, After granulation section: cooling and screening
The temperature of the wood pellets just coming out of the pelletizing chamber is very high, and they need to be cooled to room temperature before they can be packaged and stored in the next step. Therefore, the temperature is either naturally cooled or cooling equipment is used to reduce the temperature. In the production of industrial pellets, we recommend using a cooler to reduce the temperature, so as to ensure the integrity of the entire wood sawdust pellet production process.
Not all pellets can reach the standard of use, so we increase the screening equipment to recover and re-granulate the broken pellets and unformed powder that do not meet the standards.
5, Finished product packaging section
At this point, the entire wood sawdust pellet production is completed. Customers can choose whether to use the automatic packaging system. The advantages are: automation, reducing labor, suitable for large-scale production and rapid packaging.
